Career guidance for 2nd year polytechnic diploma students

Second year diploma career guide: one real skill, a Python internship for diploma students, small projects, and how Excelrs helps.

Second year of polytechnic is when diploma students start to feel the clock. One more year after this, and then a job, an apprenticeship, or a B.Tech seat. Second year is the best time to build one real skill properly.

This post is a second year diploma career guide: which skill to pick, what an internship for diploma students should look like, and how Excelrs helps second-year polytechnic students.

What second year of diploma is for

Two jobs:

  1. Go deep in one skill. Not five. One that you practise every week.
  2. Do your first proper internship or industrial training. With a project, not only attendance.

For most diploma students in 2026, that one skill is Python. It is used in software, in data, in AI, and more and more in core branches for calculations and reports.

A diploma student who can actually code is rare. Rare is easy to hire.

Why Python, and how far to go

Python is short to write and easy to read. You can see results the same day.

By the end of second year, aim for this:

LevelYou can
BasicsVariables, loops, if-else, lists
UsefulRead a file, work with a CSV, write functions
ProjectBuild a small tool, for example a marks calculator or a stock list
AI-readyCall an AI model from your own code, and check the answer

If you get to “project,” you are ahead of most diploma students. If you get to “AI-ready,” you have something to talk about in any interview.

What a good diploma internship looks like

Students search “internship for diploma students” and “industrial training for polytechnic students” and get lists of places that hand out a certificate for sitting in a room.

A good one has:

  • a clear duration and dates on the certificate
  • live classes or a mentor you can ask
  • weekly tasks that someone checks
  • a project at the end that you can show
  • a certificate anyone can verify online

Ask before you pay: can I see what a past student built?

How Excelrs helps second-year diploma students

The reference track for second year is the Basics of Python Internship for 2nd Year Diploma Students. It runs for 4 months, covers programming fundamentals, and ends with a mini project. It is open to diploma students from any technical college, not only our partner colleges.

In summer 2026, Bhaga Polytechnic's second-year students did Basics of Python and LangGraph with us from 1 June to 11 July. They learned Python and then built a first AI agent with LangGraph. Nineteen joined and 18 earned certificates.

What you get:

  • an enrollment letter with an Excelrs registration number
  • live sessions and weekly tasks
  • a mini project you submit
  • a certificate with your dates and a verify link at excelrs.dev/certificate
  • help with the project report if your polytechnic asks for one
  • a score on the Excelrs leaderboard

A second-year diploma path: Python basics, a file, a small tool, an AI call

Climb one step at a time. Each step is something you can show.

Learning with real examples

On this blog we teach AI step by step, with simple examples like attendance and marks. Good ones to start with:

Read one, then try it yourself. That is how a skill sticks.

Common second-year mistakes

Learning five languages a little. Learn one well.

Doing an internship with no project. You will have nothing to show in third year.

Ignoring your branch subjects. Your diploma marks still matter for jobs and lateral entry.

Watching videos without typing code. Watching is not practice.

Not keeping your work. Save every project in one folder or on GitHub.

Your second-year diploma checklist

  • Python up to “project” level.
  • One small tool you built yourself.
  • One internship or training with a project and a verifiable certificate.
  • All your work saved in one place.
  • Your Excelrs profile updated.

A folder icon full of small projects, one opened

Keep everything you make. By third year it becomes your portfolio.

Questions second-year diploma students ask

Which internship is best for 2nd-year diploma students? One with live teaching, weekly tasks, and a project at the end. Python is a strong choice for any branch.

Can I do an online internship from my polytechnic? Yes. Excelrs internships run online with live classes, and colleges can also send batches to our Dumka office.

I am in electrical or mechanical. Is Python useful? Yes. Calculations, readings, and reports all get easier with a little Python.

Will this help with lateral entry to B.Tech? A Python base makes the second year of B.Tech much easier, especially in CSE and IT.
