Career guidance for 1st year polytechnic diploma students
First year diploma roadmap: computer basics for every branch, Python, a first short training, and how Excelrs helps polytechnic students.

First year of polytechnic is a big jump. Many students come straight from class 10, some from class 12, and suddenly there are workshops, drawings, and new subjects in a new language. Nobody tells you what to do beyond passing.
This post is a first year diploma career guide for polytechnic students: what to learn, how computers fit every branch, your first short training, and how Excelrs helps first-year diploma students.
What first year of diploma is for
Three simple jobs:
- Pass every subject. A backlog in year one makes the next two years harder.
- Get comfortable with a computer. Typing, files, internet, email, a spreadsheet.
- Make one small thing. A tiny program, a page, or a sheet that does a calculation.
That is enough. You are building habits, not a career plan yet.
In first year, the goal is not to know a lot. It is to stop being afraid to try.
Computers matter in every branch
Students in mechanical, civil, and electrical diplomas often think computers are only for CSE. That has changed.
| Branch | Where a computer helps |
|---|---|
| Mechanical | Measurements, costing sheets, basic CAD |
| Civil | Estimates, quantity sheets, site photos and reports |
| Electrical | Load calculations, readings, simple data logs |
| Computer / IT | Programming from day one |
A diploma student who can make a clean spreadsheet, write a short report, and run a small Python script stands out in any workshop or office.
What to learn in first year
| When | Learn | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | Typing, email, Google Docs, Excel basics | You submit work on time without help |
| Semester 1 | Using AI tools safely for study | You check answers instead of copying them |
| Semester 2 | Python basics | You can write a program that adds marks and shows a percentage |
| Summer | A short training with a project | A certificate and something you made |
You do not need expensive courses. You need practice, every week, in small amounts.
Using AI tools the right way
AI chat apps are everywhere now. They can help you understand a topic. They can also make you weak if you copy every answer.
A simple rule: ask the tool to explain, then do it yourself. If you cannot do the next question without it, you did not learn the first one.
We wrote more about this on the blog: when not to use a model and what a hallucination is.
How Excelrs helps first-year diploma students
Excelrs is the training and internship platform run by Lawazia Tech from Dumka, Jharkhand. We work with Dumka Polytechnic and have run batches for Bhaga Polytechnic.
For first-year diploma students, the reference track is Intro to AI with Python and practical AI tools, about 40 days. In summer 2026, Bhaga Polytechnic's first-year students did Python Programming for Beginners with us from 8 June to 7 July. Twenty-nine students joined and 28 earned certificates.
What you get in a batch:
- live classes where you can ask questions
- small tasks every week
- one project you submit
- a certificate with your dates, checkable at excelrs.dev/certificate
- a score on the Excelrs leaderboard that grows with every training
All year-wise diploma tracks are on the campus program page. Fees and dates are on each training page.

Small steps. One project by the end of the year is a strong start.
Common first-year mistakes
Thinking computers are only for CSE. Every branch uses them now.
Copying answers from AI apps. It works until the exam.
Missing workshop practicals. Hands-on skills are what diploma students are hired for.
Waiting until the final year to learn anything new. By then, there is no time to practise.
Feeling behind because of English. Many great engineers learned English slowly. Keep reading and writing a little every day.
Your first-year diploma checklist
- No backlog at the end of the year.
- Comfortable with typing, email, and a spreadsheet.
- One small Python program you wrote yourself.
- One short training with a verifiable certificate.
- An Excelrs profile, free at excelrs.dev/signup.

Four ticks by the end of first year puts you ahead of most.
Questions first-year diploma students ask
Can a polytechnic student learn AI? Yes. You start with Python and simple tools. Many diploma students learn faster because they like hands-on work.
I am in mechanical or civil. Should I learn coding? Learn basic Python and spreadsheets. You do not have to become a programmer, but it will help in any job.
Is a first-year training needed for my diploma? Some colleges ask for it, some do not. Even if yours does not, a short training with a project helps you later.
What can I do after a diploma? Jobs in your branch, apprenticeships, or lateral entry into the second year of B.Tech. We cover this in the third-year post.
Programs you can join
For first year, start small. These are the options on Excelrs now.
| Program | Fee | Length | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Python for beginners summer track (2026 Bhaga batch) | on the training page | about 30 days | Next batch in summer |
| AI Agent Internship | ₹1,000 (list ₹2,000) | 6 or 8 weeks | You pick the start date |
Free to use: make a profile on the Excelrs leaderboard and collect points from every training, and watch the hackathons page for the next event. The AI Agent Internship is easier once you write a little Python. For the next first-year diploma batch, ask the team.
Not sure which one fits? Message the team below before you pay. We will tell you honestly if a program is too early or too late for you.
