Career guidance for 2nd year engineering students

Second year B.Tech career guide: pick a language and a framework, build two projects, find your first proper internship, and get help from Excelrs.

Second year of engineering is where the gap opens. Some students build something real. Others wait for third year. By the time placements start, that one year shows on every resume.

This post is a second year B.Tech career guide: what to learn, how to pick your first proper internship, which skills companies ask for in 2026, and how Excelrs helps second-year students.

What second year is for

Second year has one big job: pick a direction and build two real projects in it.

You do not need to be sure for life. You need to go deep enough in one area that you can explain what you built.

Three common directions for 2026:

DirectionStart withFirst real project
Web developmentJavaScript, ReactA login page plus a list you can add to
AI and agentsPython, prompts, LangGraphA bot that answers from your own notes
Core plus softwarePython for your branchA small tool for a lab calculation

AI is not only for CSE. A civil student who can write a Python script that reads site data has a story to tell.

Second year is when you stop collecting topics and start finishing projects.

Skills companies ask for

When students search “skills for 2nd year engineering students,” they find long lists. Here is the short one:

  • Git and GitHub. Push code every week.
  • One programming language, properly. Python or JavaScript.
  • Data structures basics. Arrays, lists, a few searching and sorting ideas.
  • One framework. React for web, LangGraph or similar for agents.
  • Writing a README. If you cannot explain your project in five lines, nobody will read it.

Aptitude and DSA practice can start now, slowly. Thirty minutes, three days a week, is enough in year two.

Your second-year internship

Many universities ask for an internship or industrial training after second year. This is the first time it can be a real one.

A good second-year internship gives you:

  • a project you build from start to finish
  • a mentor who reviews your work
  • a certificate with dates you can verify
  • something you can show in a third-year interview

Search terms like “summer internship for 2nd year B.Tech students” or “AI internship for engineering students” bring up hundreds of results. Ask each one: can I see a project a past student built?

How Excelrs helps second-year students

The reference track for second year is AI Agents with LangGraph. In summer 2026 the LangGraph training ran from 2 June to 15 July with 163 students enrolled, mostly from Dumka Engineering College. In summer 2025, more than 100 DEC students did the AI Agents internship with us.

If you missed the summer, the AI Agent Internship is open. You pick 6 or 8 weeks, the workshop opens when you pay, and the certificate prints the dates you chose. It covers Python, AI agents, and retrieval.

What you learn there is the same stack we teach on this blog:

Every completed training adds to your score on the Excelrs leaderboard. That score is what we look at when we pick students for internships at Lawazia Tech Dumka.

A second-year path: language, framework, two projects

Two finished projects in one direction beat six half-done ones in six.

Hackathons: the fastest proof

Second year is a good time for your first hackathon. You build in a team, under time, and you see who can ship.

In February 2026, DECTHON 2026 ran at Dumka Engineering College with 80+ participants and a ₹20,000 prize pool. Team Expedition33 — Om Kumar Choubey, Suraj Kumar Yadav, and Habiba Yashmin — took 2nd place. All three are on the profiles page with the projects they built after.

A hackathon certificate with a place on it is hard to fake and easy to talk about.

Common second-year mistakes

Doing a new tutorial every week. You learn the first ten minutes of everything.

Not using Git. Then your project lives on one laptop and dies with it.

Picking a course for the certificate only. Pick it for the project.

Ignoring your CGPA. Many companies still filter by marks. Keep it steady.

Thinking AI means only ChatGPT. Using a chat app is not the skill. Building with a model is.

Your second-year checklist

  • One direction picked: web, AI, or core plus software.
  • Git pushed every week.
  • Two projects with a README and a live link or demo video.
  • One internship or training with a verifiable certificate.
  • One hackathon, even if you do not win.
  • Your Excelrs profile updated with what you did.

Small weekly pushes add up. Recruiters can see that grid.

Questions second-year students ask

Should I learn AI or web development in second year? Pick the one you can practise every week. AI agents are in demand in 2026, and they still need basic Python and web skills around them.

Is a paid internship worth it? Pay for live teaching and a project review, not for a PDF. Ask to see a past student's project first.

When should I start DSA? Lightly in second year, seriously in third.

Can a diploma lateral-entry student start here? Yes. If you joined in second year, this is your first year here. Use the first-year checklist too.

Programs you can join

Second year is a good time for one longer program. These are open now, plus the summer AI track.
